The index looks at achievements in reproductive health, empowerment and economic status.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf women are suffering, it is not because of our ignorance, it is the process. And we are now aware of our rights. We are aware of the power and advantages we have,\u201d said Ms Kansiime.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Kansiime pointed to her friend at the table, Nana Kagga, as a source of inspiration.\u00a0 Ms Kagga, also from Uganda, is a petroleum engineer, Hollywood actress, scriptwriter, producer and business owner.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are the mother of Africa. We have held the land for so long without recognition,\u201d said Ms Kagga. \u201cUnfortunately, recognition for African women has come late\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In Rwanda, more than half of the labor force is female, one of the highest percentages in the world, according to <span><a href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/SL.TLF.TOTL.FE.ZS?most_recent_value_desc=true\">the World Bank<\/a><\/span>, and Uganda is not far behind.<\/p>\n<p>But as the primary work in many sub-Saharan countries is in agriculture, instead of lifting the social and financial status of women, they have instead become the major laborers.<\/p>\n<p>Rwanda leads the world in the number of women in parliament, with more than 60% of seats held by women. But <span><a href=\"http:\/\/evaw-global-database.unwomen.org\/en\/countries\/africa\/rwanda\">the UN estimates<\/a><\/span> a third of Rwandan women will suffer from physical or sexual abuse in their lifetime, despite government campaigns and laws.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rwandareports.hkbujournalism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/violence.png\" width=\"854\" height=\"525\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-395 aligncenter size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rwandareports.hkbujournalism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/violence.png 854w, https:\/\/rwandareports.hkbujournalism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/violence-300x184.png 300w, https:\/\/rwandareports.hkbujournalism.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/violence-768x472.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 854px) 100vw, 854px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Source: Police statistics reported by the regional newspaper The Independent<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The third women at the table, Carol Rugege, said she divorced after suffering from emotional abuse and mental health damage in her marriage.
